One of the biggest problems we face in today's society is all of the people spending time in various forms of prisons, jails, and rehabilitation centers. Many states decided it is better to go with a merciful form of life in prison rather than the death penalty. But those states have later learned this causes the problem of having prisons overpopulated with prisoners. This causes problems with high costs that is a very large burden to tax payers -- especially in the difficult economic time we are going through today.
What is even worse with law enforcement in today's society is the way a judge will sentence criminals to spend a long time in jail or prison, but the criminal will only spend a very small fraction of that time in jail or prison. The reason this occurs is because of "good behavior" that criminals are rewarded for while behind bars. This would not be happening in such a problematic way if it wasn't for the fact that our prisons are so severely overpopulated, combined with the fact that we don't have the financial resources needed to keep spending money on giving prisoners free rent for decades at a time. Criminals in todays society realize that although they may hear a judge say one thing, it is often nothing more than an exaggerated statement -- even when repeat offenders are involved.
The movie Starship Troopers had a scene that always left an impression on me. The first time I saw this part of the movie Starship Troopers, I thought to myself "I wonder what it would be like if our society punished criminals in this type of way." I am referring to the scene in the movie where a criminal is sentenced to death and publicly executed. In the world of Starship Troopers, when a death penalty occurs, the execution is broadcast simultaneously on all TV channels and apparently all forms of media such as the Internet and radio stations.
This form of public broadcast of severe punishments is an excellent source of motivation for people of all ages to avoid becoming criminals! This, in part, is the concept behind what the Bible refers to as "The Fear of the Lord." The number of criminals in the Starship Trooper society is vastly reduced using this form of public intimidation to motivate people to become citizens of the federation. The society in Starship Troopers wants to honor the people who invest the time and effort needed to become quality citizens of society. This is much more desirable than committing crimes that will lead to severe physical punishment such as the whip-lashing that Johnny Rico received in front of all his peers at the training academy.
What do you think? Would our society benefit if sports games and soap operas were interupted in order to show criminals being publicly executed or publicly punished? Would our society benefit from forms of punishment such as a whip-lashing like Johnny Rico received rather than long prison sentences that end up as short prison sentences that are a financial burden to the government?
